California Proposition 65 Warning
California’s Proposition 65 requires businesses to give a clear and reasonable warning before exposing anyone in California to chemicals the state has listed as causing cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. This page explains how that requirement is handled here.
What the law asks for
Proposition 65 is a disclosure rule, not a product safety standard. It applies to a long and varied list of substances, and the listed thresholds for some of them are far below the levels at which any harm has been observed. A warning under the law therefore does not by itself mean a product is unsafe or that it fails any standard; it means a listed substance may be present above the state’s threshold in that item or its packaging.
How this affects our listings
Whether a specific item requires a Proposition 65 warning depends on how it was manufactured, what materials and coatings were used, and what the supplier has declared. That determination has to be made item by item, against supplier information, and it cannot honestly be guessed from a product photograph or a material description.
Operator confirmation required
The Proposition 65 status of each product, including the exact warning language where one is required, must be confirmed by the operator with suppliers before this store accepts live orders. Until that confirmation is recorded per product, no Proposition 65 warning is asserted here, and none should be read into a listing on this site.
Warnings you may see
Where a warning is required, it is shown on the product page and on the packaging in the form the regulation sets out, commonly the short-form warning beginning with the word WARNING followed by the substance and the state’s standard sentence. Short-form and long-form warnings carry the same meaning; the difference is how much explanation is printed.
Reducing everyday exposure
Proposition 65 warnings are aimed at long-term, low-level exposure rather than single incidents. Common-sense handling applies to any adult product: keep items clean and dry as the care instructions describe, wash hands after handling a product and before eating, ventilate a room rather than sealing a used item away while it is still damp, and keep packaging and small parts away from children and pets.
Questions about a specific item
If you need to know the status of one particular product before ordering, write to support with the product name and we will tell you what the operator has confirmed and what is still outstanding. We would rather answer a direct question than have a customer guess.
